Retention

The quiet retention lever: investing in your people's health

By Tom Collins, Co-Founder and Head Coach 5 min read

Ok, so retention is expensive, and everyone knows it. By the time you count recruitment, onboarding, training and the lost productivity while someone gets up to speed, replacing a single person can cost tens of thousands of pounds.

BLUF: one of the most human, and most overlooked, retention levers is simply investing in your people's health. People stay where they feel genuinely looked after.

What the evidence says

Workers are around 53% less likely to leave an employer that prioritises their wellbeing. Set that against a cost of replacing someone that often runs into the tens of thousands, and the maths gets interesting quickly.

Why investing in health lands so well

Here is the thing. It is personal.

A benefit that changes how someone feels in their own body, every single day, is felt far more deeply than a branded water bottle or another all-staff email. It quietly says "we are invested in you". And people tend to return that.

So what that means is: helping someone get fitter, sleep better and feel more capable is not just a health win. It is one of the strongest loyalty signals you can send.

It compounds, too

Healthier people are usually more engaged, more energetic and less burnt out. And burnout, low energy and feeling undervalued are exactly the things that push people towards the door. So you are not just adding a reason to stay. You are removing reasons to leave.

An honest word

That being said, this only works if it is real. If it is a box-tick, people see straight through it. It earns loyalty because it genuinely helps them, not because it looks good in the benefits brochure.

The key takeaway

People do not tend to leave places that are visibly, genuinely invested in them. Health is one of the most honest ways to show it, and it happens to pay for itself many times over in people who stay.

If keeping your best people is on your mind, don't sit on it. Get in touch and we will show you how a coached programme fits in.
